The Dead: My Favorite Christmas Movie
James Joyce’s The Dead (1987), directed by John Huston and starring Anjelica Huston, is hands down my favorite Christmas drama. Huston perfectly captures the tone of Joyce’s work: the spirited Irish Christmas dinner in Dublin, 1904, a celebration over which a heaviness looms – the haunting memories of the past which have left their indelible mark on the occasion.
The last lines of this short story are some of the most beautiful Joycean lines that I have ever read. You need to hear them read aloud to get the full experience. Even if you’ve never been to Ireland, you can hear the clip-clap of horse-drawn carriages clicking over cobblestones near the River Liffey in the bitter cold. Here is a clip to the ending of Huston’s The Dead:
Merry Christmas, Everyone!
